What makes Tennessee Tech’s counselling and psychology programmes stand out from other universities?

I initially chose Tennessee Tech for its location and strong reviews about the university and its programmes, but my conversation with Dr. Daniel Upchurch, the concentration leader, confirmed my decision. He spoke highly of his vision for the programme and the opportunities available to students, which made me excited about joining Tennessee Tech.

What hands-on experience do counselling students get during the programme?

Students have opportunities to participate in role-playing activities, case studies, group experiences, discussions, and field-based learning opportunities. These experiences help bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. As someone who currently works in schools, I have found many opportunities to connect what I am learning in class to real situations I encounter in my professional role.

Does the programme help build skills like empathy and ethical decision-making?

This programme has helped us refine those existing skills through its ethical framework and professional standards, alongside practical strategies for supporting others effectively. We have developed these skills through class discussions, role-playing activities, case studies, and reflective writing assignments.

How supportive is the faculty?

The faculty in the Counselling and Psychology department create opportunities for growth in teaching, research, leadership, and advocacy. They push you toward your goals and guide you along the way. For example, I co-taught with a faculty member and enjoyed doing so. The faculty member always provides me with feedback, which includes strengths and areas for growth when needed. I have already seen real growth in my teaching within my first year here.

What research projects or presentations will students work on?

I currently serve as a graduate assistant for the department. I’m also developing a manuscript with a faculty member on a topic I’m passionate about, aiming for publication. I recently presented a poster at the Tennessee Licensed Professional Counsellors Association Conference, where I networked and got feedback on my research. A faculty member also asked me to serve as a statistics consultant for the summer. These opportunities have broadened my expertise and built my confidence in various aspects.

How does Tennessee Tech help students with their post-graduation plans?

My post-graduation goal is to engage in teaching, research, and/or counselling. Tennessee Tech is helping me work toward these goals by giving me opportunities to strengthen my research skills, present scholarly work, gain teaching and assistantship experience, and learn from faculty mentors. The programme is helping me become more prepared to serve in various roles.

What are classes like in a counsellling psychology master’s programme? Is it more theory-based, practical, or a mix?

The classes are a healthy mix of theory and practical application. We learn foundational counselling theories and research while also participating in discussions, skills practice, case conceptualisation, and experiential learning activities. This combination helps us understand why certain approaches work and how to effectively apply them when working with clients. You’ll learn early on that one size doesn’t fit all and oftentimes the answer is “it depends.”

Is this programme suitable for international students, career changers, and/or professionals looking to advance in the field?

Absolutely. The programme is designed for students from traditional and various educational and professional backgrounds. The curriculum is designed to support a wide range of learners and career goals. Besides, the diverse perspectives students bring enrich the learning experience for everyone.

How does this degree prepare you for licensure or certification in the US?

The programme provides the coursework and supervised clinical experience required for licensure, depending on state regulations. Beyond just knowledge, students learn ethical standards and professional competencies expected of licensed counsellors. Faculty also help students understand licensure requirements, examination processes, and continuing education pathways that support long-term professional growth.
